Brief

We were given the task to design an app under the topic of travel. We had to focus on making the app illustrative.

I wanted to focus on something I would personally find useful, whilst creating an app that did not already have a place in the market. This is what initially inspired the idea for 'QUIRKEY'.

Process

I first began to brainstorm. Mind mapping helped me to make decisions and explore my ideas. I thought about people who travel across cities all over the world and how difficult it can be for them to find amazing bespoke, one off boutiques. Wouldn't it be incredibly useful if there was something to help people find these stores?

I then started to sketch out my ideas. I created early versions of wireframes to help me decide on a layout. I then began to think of colours and concepts. I created the icons for my app also.

I wanted to focus on the visual aspect as much as possible with the aim to symbolise the opportunities to unlock and discover new fashion secrets. Hence, the resulting logo of a flying key and the brand name 'QUIRKEY'.

Solution

The purpose of this app is to locate bespoke boutiques in cities around the world. You simply choose the country you are travelling to, select the city and then the kind of store you are looking for. You will then be presented with an illustration of the city, showing location points of the relevant stores. When you click on the store, the location, a brief description and contact details will appear. Lastly, you can use your own location to see how close you are.

The design of the app and the pastel colour scheme aims to exude a dreamlike and whimsical state of mind. The thought behind this is to enhance the idea of traveling to new cities and discovering unknown places - just like in your dreams. The illustration style creates soft, feminine and wanderlust vibes.
